The installation of RBE – Rotor Blade Extension of the company Energiekontor was already undertaken in both German and Portuguese wind farms, namely at the Penedo Ruivo’s Wind Farm, in Serra do Marão, in the county of Amarante (Portugal).
The installation project of the extension of the blades to the wind turbines in the Penedo Ruivo’s Wind Farm, in exploration since 2005, was developed with the intention of increasing the performance of the wind turbines already installed on-site.
The extension is administered on the tip of the blade and consists of an additional modular segment, applied over the tip of the blade which is already fixed on the rotor.
Thanks to the extension of the blade in each wind turbine, it is possible to increment the performance of the system, without requiring the substitution of the whole structure, which generates less impacts over the environment and territory than the installation of new wind turbines, while also making use of already existing infrastructures.
Given the small dimension of the required interventions for the blade extension installation to the wind turbines in the Penedo Ruivo’s Wind Farm, there was no need for the establishment of an outpost for the work undertakings. The working areas consisted of the platforms around each one of the wind turbines, which offered the parking area of vehicles involved in the work procedures and for the storage of the material and residues generated throughout the operation.
